MARIPOSAS (AEG)
Mariposas chronicles the journey of the Monarch butterfly as it makes its way each spring from Michoacan, Mexico to Canada and back home again in the fall.
What an absolute pleasure it was to work with Elizabeth Hargrave on the follow-up to her massively successful debut game, Wingspan. The folks at AEG went the extra mile to ensure that the game’s mechanics had accurate ties to the butterflies’ real-life journey from Mexico.
Our team’s challenge with Mariposas was to create a setting that accentuated the incredible butterfly and flower art of tattoo artist Indie Maverick. The colour palette was inspired by the colourful bits of sugar and clay used to decorate the ‘Calveras’ (sugar skulls) as part of the Day of the Dead festival in Mexico. These vibrant colours along with the beautiful script font, Limon by Argentinian type designer Sabrina Lopez came together to create a distinctly ‘bespoke’ and immersive theme for Mariposas.
